Hugh Derbyshire specialises in Property Law and Public Law including Judicial Review with particular strengths in licensing, housing, highways and planning.

Hugh's Judicial Review practice has focused on advisory work on a range of local government matters including planning, highways and regeneration schemes.  Advisory practice in other areas of Judicial Review includes instructions concerning elderly persons' protection.

His Public Law practice also includes substantial experience of premises licensing, including appearing before and advising local authority licensing committees and conducting magistrates' courts appeals.  He also has extensive experience of advising and litigating in social housing matters.

Hugh was the secretary of the working group of North West lawyers which campaigned for the Administrative Court to operate outside London and so made more accessible to applicants in the North West and Wales.  He is also a Member of the steering group for the Northern Administrative Law Association and a Member of the Administrative Law Bar Association.

Building on substantial academic experience of public law at undergraduate and postgraduate level Hugh has continued to develop his knowledge of Administrative Law.

Recent events attended include the Administrative Law Bar Association's Introduction to Judicial Review Course 2007, the Housing Law Practitioners Association Conference 2007, the Public Law Project's Judicial Review North Conference 2008 and in-house training at Atlantic Chambers also in 2008.

Hugh is keen to develop and broaden his Judicial Review practice acting both for claimants and defendants to cover other areas of local authority activity.
